Brad Johnson. Trent Dilfer. Eli Manning. Phil Simms. Jim McMahon.
These are the names Aiden O’Connell and Gardner Minshew need to etch into their lockers so they see them every single day. Quarterbacks that understood their role on the team, and won a Super Bowl because the defense was the unquestioned star.
That’s going to be the challenge for these Raiders over the next couple of years. This defense is on the verge of being special. Crosby finally has someone to crash the pocket and give him a chance to get to the quarterback before he can step up. The secondary is young, but a good pass rush can help them take a few chances to force turnovers.
On offense, this team has been accumulating playmakers and is starting to look like they can do some damage if the quarterback can get the ball into their hands. A strong draft improved the offensive line and added the right personnel for Luke Getsy’s scheme. Running a two tight end set would limit most teams but for this Raiders group it will capitalize on their strengths.
Antonio Pierce is bringing back the Raiders mentality to the organization. Just win baby is more than a slogan, its a way of life for this team. No need to be pretty about it, no need to get fancy. Just win. Do whatever it takes and walk away with the W. It’s been awhile since Raiders fans have been able to feel optimistic about our chances and this season feels like we’re taking a big step forward even if it won’t show up in the record. (that’s a rough schedule this year)
Here’s hoping Aiden O’Connell can show us something this year and be the quarterback this team needs for the future. But if not, next year I’m hoping the team gets aggressive. While everyone is guessing Dak to the Raiders, the baller move – the Al Davis move – would be to grab Kirk Cousins from Atlanta after they move on to Penix.
The future is bright, and Kansas City can’t win forever, right?
2024 Prediction: 9-8 2nd AFC West
