Talk about an identity crisis! Is this the team that went 10-1 and looked primed for a Super Bowl return, or is it the team that flamed out and finished 1-6 including a bad loss to Tampa Bay in the playoffs?
Again this year, Nick Sirianni is starting the season with a set of new coordinators.
Vic Fangio is a definite upgrade over the trainwreck that was running the defense in 2023. He should provide a stabilizing force on that defense. There are still questions in the secondary, and even though it was addressed in the draft, starting rookies is never a good sign. Hopefully the front seven can return to their 2022 form and disrupt the pocket enough that it will hide some of the weakness behind them.
Kellen Moore is another upgrade over last year. But the shine on his star has dulled a bit. Dallas’ offensive improvement last year and the Chargers’ failure to launch has some questioning if Moore’s system is as good as advertised. If he can bond with Jalen Hurts and develop a system based on Hurts’ strengths then this offense could be formidable. It also doesn’t hurt to have a running back like Saquon Barkley to take some of the pressure off.
There’s a lot to like here in Philadelphia, but I think the biggest question going into the season is Sirianni. The past three years he’s had a different set of coordinators. I think fans really want to know if the team is playing to the quality of the coordinators or to the quality of the Head Coach? Sirianni needs to prove something this year and show that he is the one that is setting the direction for this team. A late season collapse or a slow start will not sit well with the fans.
