So not to be outdone by the Bills and the Jets, the Chiefs have pulled off a wide receiver trade of their own. Was getting an aging DeAndre Hopkins a move of desperation or genius?
Let’s see how this works for everyone involved.
Kansas City:
What they are getting:
DeAndre Hopkins is 32 and hasn’t been that productive since signing with the Titans. That could be a result of bad quarterback play or declining ability with age. There are reports of a knee injury that has been bothering him, but that could heal really quick on a new team.
Kansas City has been ravaged by injuries to the wide receiver position. Hopkins gives them a talented guy who can still go up and win 50/50 balls, and should take the pressure off Kelce in the red zone. He might not have the same speed he used to, but in the Chiefs system, he’s going to get open. If he can stay healthy, and JuJu gets healthy in time for the playoffs, this offense should be good enough.
What they gave up:
A 5th round pick next year that could turn into a 4th round pick if they make the Super Bowl. They also got Tennessee to pay part of Hopkins’ salary this year.
Grade: A
Getting a potential star receiver for a day three pick? Someone should call the police – that’s grand theft!
Tennessee:
What they are getting:
A late round pick for a player they had no chance of signing to a new contract after this season. So even though it wasn’t a great bounty, it’s more than they would have if they let him walk for nothing at the end of the season.
What they gave up:
Hopkins hasn’t played up to his standards since joining the Titans. The offense is geared to be run first and utilizing tight ends on safe throws. So Hopkins wasn’t that integral to their offense.
Grade: B-
They got something for him, and they got rid of a player that no longer wanted to be there before he became a locker room problem. But maybe if the offense was more wide receiver focused he would have been more productive, more engaged, and the team might have won a few more games?
DeAndre Hopkins:
What he’s getting:
Patrick Mahomes.
What he gave up:
Will Levis.
Grade: A+
