Let’s be honest, Washington won their offseason when Daniel Snyder sold the team. Anything else that happens this year is just a bonus.
It looks like Washington is taking that to heart, building for the future and not worrying about reaching to try and win now. Jayden Daniels was the right pick at #2, but he still needs to develop. It’s very tough for young quarterbacks to be successful when they are starting during a full rebuild.
I’m not sold on Dan Quinn and Kliff Kingsbury being the right team to develop Daniels. I think if you knew you were bringing in a young quarterback then you hire a young offensive coach to lead your team. Defensive coaches are detrimental to a young quarterback’s growth. I think we’ve all seen that Quinn’s success in Atlanta was more tied to Kyle Shanahan being the offensive coordinator. And Kliff Kingsbury has worked with a lot of talented quarterbacks, but it’s never resulted in winning football. Maybe it’s the quarterbacks making his system work rather than him developing quarterbacks?
Daniels is going to have a rough year, but there are enough weapons on offense that he should be able to find some success. He’s going to need to learn how to play from the pocket though, with his slender frame he’s not going to be able to play the same style he had at LSU. He reminds me a lot of RGIII, and he needs to look at that as a cautionary tale. Do too much, too soon, and you could ruin your career before it ever gets started.
The goal this year for Washington should be to shift the culture away from the Snyder era. Start laying the foundation to return this franchise to greatness. Unfortunately that doesn’t leave a lot of room for wins.
2024 Prediction: 4-13 3rd NFC East.
